Competition 2025

What some of our judges said this year about The Long Way Home stories

‘It’s been such a joy and privilege over the past few years to read and judge the wonderful entries in the Long Way Home writing competition. The imagination, creativity, and heart that our young writers have poured into their work truly brings the Clarence Valley to life on the page whether the journey was through the bush, across the seas, into magical worlds, or even a journey of friendship and self-discovery.’ Jess Wood – Grafton Book Warehouse, primary school section judge

“What a joy it is to read stories from young writers of the Northern Rivers—each story offers heart-warming insight into the perspectives of the young people of the region as they explore ideas of community, kindness, family and empathy through the theme of ‘Heart of Gold.’ Tess Barber, high school section judge

It was a joy to read all of the high school entries as part of The Long Way Home short story competition 2025. The stories this year were of a high standard, with much creative flair in the use of language, tone, themes, and format. While all of the entries were excellent, the stories that stood out the most were those that moved me – the stories with unusual voices, deep emotion, playfulness, and a clear message to the reader. Our shortlisted entries relate to the ‘Heart of gold’ theme in beautiful and unique ways, and have some interesting crossover with one another. Thank you for having me as a judge in this wonderful community-led competition. It’s an honour to support emerging writers in the Clarence Valley.Sara Rose-Cherry, high school section judge
